We are always interested to hear from scientists interested in undertaking postgraduate or postdoctoral research in our lab. Below is some information on working at QUB, and some information on funding opportunities. Drop us a line if you're interested in discussing any of these opportunities.
Postgraduate research students at QUB are supported by the Graduate School, through which training and development opportunities are available to all. Postdoctoral researchers are supported by the Postdoctoral Development Centre, which provides training, support, development opportunities and advice for researchers working at QUB.
Our team are based in QUB's
School of Biological Sciences within a purpose built research centre, opened 2019. Our lab is part of a
world-renowned, but welcoming and supportive parasitology ecosystem currently comprising nine academics, 10 postdoctoral researchers and >20 PhD students. We
have access to state-of-the-art laboratory facilities for molecular research, including Qiagen quantitative
(q)PCR systems, a BioRad digital droplet (dd)PCR system, an Oxford Nanopore GridION, Izon Exoid and qEV
systems. Our laboratories are well equipped for molecular work, as well as cell/parasite culture and
microbiology facilities, microscopy and microinjection laboratories, and a snail aquaculture space.
Within the wider Faculty of Medicine Health and Life Sciences, we also have access to facilities for
high performance computing,
sequencing and genomics and
bioimaging
, all of which are maintained at the state-of-the-art.
For students interested in joining our team for PhD studies, the following funding sources are available for PhD research at QUB:
Northern Ireland Department for the Economy (DfE): Defined projects across a range of topics, advertised annually.
Northern Ireland Department for Agriculture Environment and Rural Affairs: Student-driven projects designed with supervisor, with a veterinary/agriculture focus, available annually.
BBSRC FoodBioSystems Doctoral Training Programme: Defined projects in food/agriculture-related areas, advertised annually.
NERC QUADRAT Doctoral Training Programme: Defined projects in environment-related fields, advertised annually.
BBSRC OneZoo Centre for Doctoral Training: Defined projects in zoonotic disease research, advertised annually.
These awards may be restricted to students from the UK, international students can consider a Commonwealth Scholarship.
For those with, or about to obtain a PhD, independent fellowships are available from the major funders. These generally cover salary and research costs, and are considered very prestigious awards. We are happy to host fellowships in our research areas, and we will provide grant writing support for applicants. QUB's Postdoctoral Development Centre has an excellent resource on fellowship funding opportunities.
